Full-waveform inversion by model extension: Practical applications

چکیده

Producing reliable acoustic subsurface velocity models still remains the main bottleneck of oil and gas industry’s traditional imaging sequence. In complex geologic settings, output conventional ray-based or wave-equation-based tomographic methods may not be sufficiently accurate for full-waveform inversion (FWI) to converge a geologically satisfactory earth model. We create new method referred as by model extension (FWIME) in which wave-equation migration analysis (WEMVA) technique is efficiently paired with modified version FWI. find that our more powerful than applying WEMVA FWI sequentially, it can solutions without use good initial guess low-frequency energy. determine FWIME’s potential on five realistic challenging numerical examples simulate scenarios often encountered hydrocarbon exploration. guide reader step throughout optimization process. simultaneously invert all wave types same simple mechanism need user-intensive hyperparameter tuning an open-source online repository, we provide C++/compute unified device architecture (CUDA) implementation accelerated graphics processing units, encapsulated Python interface. All developed are accessible through notebooks fully reproducible.

Image-guided full waveform inversion

Multiple problems, including high computational cost, spurious local minima, and solutions with no geologic sense, have prevented widespread application of full waveform inversion (FWI), especially FWI of seismic reflections. These problems are fundamentally related to a large number of model parameters and to the absence of low frequencies in recorded seismograms. Instead of inverting for all ...

3D acoustic frequency-domain full-waveform inversion

We present one of the first attempt at implementing a massively parallel frequency-domain full-waveform inversion algorithm for imaging 3D acoustic media. The inverse method is based on a classic steepest-descent algorithm. The algorithm was designed so that one or several frequencies are inverted at a time. Wave propagation modeling, a key component of the inversion algorithm, is performed wit...

A projected Hessian for full waveform inversion

A Hessian matrix in full waveform inversion (FWI) is difficult to compute directly because of high computational cost and an especially large memory requirement. Therefore, Newton-like methods are rarely feasible in realistic largesize FWI problems. We modify the BFGS method to use a projected Hessian matrix that reduces both the computational cost and memory required, thereby making a quasiNew...

Full waveform inversion with image-guided gradient

The objective of seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) is to estimate a model of the subsurface that minimizes the difference between recorded seismic data and synthetic data simulated for that model. Although FWI can yield accurate and high-resolution models, multiple problems have prevented widespread application of this technique in practice. First, FWI is computationally intensive, in part ...

Improved depth imaging by constrained full-waveform inversion

We propose a formulation of full-wavefield inversion (FWI) as a constrained optimization problem, and describe a computationally efficient technique for solving constrained full-wavefield inversion (CFWI). The technique is based on using a total-variation regularization method, with the regularization weighted in favor of constraining deeper subsurface model sections. The method helps to promot...
